Butcher Block countertops and butcher block kitchen Islands are one of the fastest growing sectors of our business. Whether it is the clean straight grained look
of maple or the rich honey tones and deep veins of red oak, wood is the perfect choice for the work surfaces
of your kitchen.
The term Butcher Block has two meanings. The original meaning comes from the blocks Michigan Maple Block and Bally Block manufactured in the late 1800s. These blocks were End Grain construction and were the cutting surface of choice of the commercial meat cutting industry. Every butcher on every corner had a butcher block.
Today the term has also come to mean Edge Grain Construction. Over the years butchers wanted smaller and more portable versions of the solid Maple butcher block End Grain blocks they had used for years. Edge grain cutting boards were developed. These have become very common. With the increase in popularity of these boards the definition of butcher block expanded to include edge grain construction with the appearance of butt joints in some of the laminations.
The warmth of solid wood countertops cannot be surpassed by any other material.

Maple Butcher Block is the most traditional of all Butcher Block products. Its soft graining and subtle color variations complement any kitchen. Maple Butcher Blocks look fabulous finished in our standard Durakryl 102 finish or you may opt to have the block oiled for a very traditional look.
Solid Northern Hard Maple Butcher Block tops are as beautiful as they are functional. While you enjoy the soft grain and subtle color variations of your top you also can use it as a true cutting surface. Coated with an acrylic finish, DURAKRYL 102, which require little or no maintenance these tops bring together the warm texture and feel of solid wood and the durability and longevity of a solid surface and the surface is completely food safe.
It is not necessary to sand off this finish prior to using the top, as it is approved for food service use. The finish is formulated to repel most household solvents. Stains can be cleaned off with finger nail polish remover or bleach, neither of these two substances can hurt the finish. Although the finish is durable, it will scratch and using the surface as a cutting board will degrade the finish. The wonderful feature of butcher block is that a light sanding of the effected area and an application of "Good Stuff" brings the block back to is original condition. Because the block is solid through and though, you can rest assured that the nicks, dings and dents that life puts into the block can be repaired with simple techniques. This assures you that the appearance of your countertop can be maintained for years to come.

These tops and a wonderful addition to the line since they offer deep rich tone which fills out the color palette nicely. Walnut is characterized by large areas of deep brown highlighted beautifully by an occasional streak of lighted wood. We do recommend Black Walnut tops be finished in Durakryl 102.
Many people are familiar with black walnut only as a stained wood. Few people realize in its natural form walnut has a wide range of color. For some people familiar with walnut this is one of the endearing qualities of the wood. This unique grain structure and color variation shows all of the character of the environment in which the tree lived. Please realize that if you choose walnut for a counter top you should expect some striking color variation.
One option you have with black walnut is to request that we "sap stain" the top to reduce the color variation. This will tone down and even out the contrast of light wood to dark. This choice should be given careful consideration. Natural variations in the color of wood, especially walnut and cherry are not considered a manufacturers defect. Additionally, we do not stain to match other items or samples. The purpose of sap staining is to reduce the natural color variations and should not be thought of as a traditional staining process. No choices of stains are available and the degree of staining is at the sole discretion of the Wood Welded Companies.
